The derivation of the hamiltonian of a two level system (atom or molecule with only two energy levels taken into account) interacting with a single mode of the radiation field inside a lossless cavity (Jaynes-Cummings Model) will be described. The interaction takes place via the induced dipole moment of the atoms with the radiation field. To be explicit, wavefunctions of the hydrogen atom are considered. The dipole matrix elements are calculated for nonrelativistic (Schrödinger) and for relativistic hydrogen atoms (Dirac). Comparisons are made between the time developement of nonrelativistic and relativistic hydrogen atoms in this model for several observables like inversion and dipole moment. Phaseshifts between the nonrelativistic and relativistic case are observed.
